Yoga Indulgences

Posted Jun 19 2010 6:01pm

As a wise woman once said (I'm paraphrasing here) -- "you don't need all that stuff to practice yoga." The fancy clothes, the uber-expensive mats, the tricked out accessories -- all of this stuff isn't a necessity of your yoga practice. When I settle in for my yoga practice, it's just me and my mat (and, on occasion,  I don't use a mat). Still, there are things that buy because we want them.

My Own Version of Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks

I recently saw the latest Sex in the City movie, which is funny since I never watched the series. I just couldn't relate to the hunger for expensive designer clothes and shoes (my shoe collection is more Merrell, Keen, Sanuk, and Kuru than Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik). Now that doesn't mean that us yoga folk don't have our Blahnik equivalents like Lululemon and Manduka. There's a lot of yoga and yoga-related merchandise out there and even though I don't need it, I sometimes indulge myself.

A Few of My Favorite Things

My indulgences have gotten a bit more modest over the years (I haven't bought a $90 pair of yoga pants in years and I've had the same Manduka mat for well over 5 years). My new love is Etsy , where I find low-cost indulgences that allow me to support peoples' creative endeavors (which I love). Here are some of my favorite Etsy goodies/sellers:

  • The Emperor Seat -- Want to meditate in style? This hand-crafted meditation stool is just beautiful.
  • Mandala Meditation Stool -- If you're looking for a colorful addition to your meditation practice, this hand-painted stool offers a fun and funky place to park your meditating self.
  • Yoga Studio Art -- I like the art on my home yoga studio walls to be meaningful as well as beautiful. The wall art by SwirlyGirl is just my style -- colorful, inspiring and inexpensive.
  • Curly-Haired Yogis' Best Friends -- I stumbled upon the Spiral Solutions Etsy store by accident while searching for natural hair care products. These homemade products are divine -- and they are budget-friendly.
  • All Natural Deodorant -- The question my friends and I have been asking lately is -- "Is there a natural deodorant on the market that doesn't give out after two hours, leaving us smelling like we've just walked out of a hot yoga class?" After a lot of testing, I found some great deodorant at Verbena Custom Blends. My favorite thing about these deodorants is that I get to choose the scent I want. They don't give out after two hours, but after a particularly hot day, I do reapply around midday. I'll take that as a victory.
  • Yoga Soaps -- My new favorite thing to buy is natural, hand-made soaps. I've scouted my local area and have yet to find a source for hand-made soaps. When I found Sacred Suds on Etsy, I immediately fell in love. Who wouldn't love to buy prana or Ganesha soap? Yep, you guessed it, in addition to a wide variety of scented soaps, Sacred Suds also has a line of yoga soaps. It's just good, clean fun if you ask me.
  • Artistic Malas -- I love malas but I'm often shocked at the ridiculously high prices. Compassion Malas sells wood malas, wrist malas, Bodhiseed malas, pocket malas and mala counter sets at reasonable prices.
  • Spa Goddess -- This is one of the rare purveyors of natural luxurious products that don't cost an arm and a leg. I highly recommend the Ayurvedic Organic Cleansing Grains
  • Zen Moon -- I first found Zen Moon on Etsy, but they have since graduated to their very own ecommerce site. I fell in love with the Goddess Durga V-neck at first site and I get compliments on it every time I wear it. And my new favorite addition to my wardrobe is the stylish and versatile Cherry Blossom Kanji Throw-Over. Just be aware that the shirts run a bit small, so you might want to order the next size up.

As for the indulgences I haven't gotten around to purchasing -- The Yoga Seat , handmade with wood local to Hawaii (I thought it might be a nice change of pace from my current meditation bench) and My Custom Yoga Mat , which allows you to customize your yoga mat with a wide range of colors and embroider.

Win a Zen Moon Custom Designed T-Shirt

Yep, I don't need any of this stuff to practice yoga, but I sure do enjoy indulging from time to time. What's your favorite yoga and yoga-related indulgence? Let me know (comment by Friday, June 25) and I'll pick one comment at random to win a Zen Moon custom designed t-shirt.

A little indulgence isn't a bad thing!

Namaste!
