The image of Shiva Rea with her long board on Sunset Beach and my session at Quiksilver Mission's " Yoga for Surfers " has got me thinking about how strongly yoga & soul surfing ( vs. aggro carving on short boards ) are joined at the hip. Even the OG surfer in Keanu's epic " Point Break " was named BODHI.
When you are sitting on your board , in the line up, waiting for the sets to roll in - that feels most like seeing the OM rotation and hum of the Universe. The sight of dolphins cresting by would just take it "off the richter". Surfing was the only athletic endeavor where I felt the energy of the Universe .Growing up in a family that played golf & every racquet sport known to man,the phrase "killer instinct' was always lobbed around. So aggro competition vs. mellow relaxation was emphasized.
Yoga, in my case, has become a more accessible channel to the "I'm with the Universe" FLOW as it does not involve "dawn patrol" , hostile locals, clueless "kooks" ( ok , we do have newbies in class heh, heh ), scars from coral reefs, rip tides ( yup, cramped up trying to paddle out of one in Padang Padang, Bali ) or the worst case scenario : no waves -
A couple of sites worth scoping out for surf & yoga retreats are " Blissologist , Yogi & Surfer " EOIN Finn's Vancouver Yoga & Aussie site Samudra ( Sanskrit for Ocean ). And if you happen to be in Venice CA , Quiksilver Mission is hosting a "Perfect Day Surf Camp" this Sat. AM @ 9:30. RSVP to get on the list -
