The Shape of My Heart

ShapeOfMyHeart
Each one sees what he carries in his heart.
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I watched a movie on Friday night that haunted me all weekend. It was a re-run that stuttered because of poor sound editing, where the original cuss words would have been more soothing. I don' t like to watch movies that are spliced with commercials anymore, but this time it was different. Each break gave me time to think.

The Professional casts Jean Reno as a hit man, a hired killer who befriends a little girl ( Natalie Portman ) whose entire family has been obliterated by DEA agents. It' s a violent movie and when it first ran in 1994, critics objected to the placement of a 12 year old in the middle of so much "adult action".

When the movie ended and the credits scrolled toward the top of the screen, the voice of Sting singing Shape of My Heart revealed my fascination with this film:

He deals the cards to find the answer
The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance

I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that' s not the shape of my heart

We are all characters with roles, rehearsed to be played while wearing costumes and wielding props. Beneath it all, despite what might seem to be a bizarre and plotless existence, there is a heart that beats with Divine rhythm. Whenever I recognize that beat in a fellow human being, no matter the role, costume or stage, there' s such a great comfort. Separatism truly is an illusion, and that' s not the shape of my heart.

Sting: Shape of My Heart (YouTube, 04:00) WARNING: The video that plays with the soundtrack is from The Professional and contains many violent scenes. You may opt to scroll down to view the lyrics and listen to the beautiful song.
