Yelp is a terrific resource "for reals" & unbiased reviews . Here's a post on SMPY from fellow Yelper Sarah Beth S. All comments in parentheses are mine :
Whoa! putting the "Pow" in power yoga....
But I have mixed feelings about this place:
Pros:
* The yogis are really living la vida yoga, they know their shit and they care about your practice. It was sincerly felt yoga and not gym instruction style yoga. Nor was it over the top new agey, Vytas kept it down to earth and relatable. Oh and he was hot and shirtless. ( As his MySpace profile best describes it : I'm so ripped , I need a sewing kit )
* The space is really appropriate for yoga, it's simplistic and earthy with mirrors ( FYI : Fred Astaire used to bust his moves here ) for checking out your form...not a stinky gym room where you hear the squeaks of the weight machines....
* it worked me out, no doubt. I have never sweat like that in yoga before i don't think.
* It pushed me but it wasn't competive or impossible. Challenging.
* The instructor wasn't the only hot shirtless guy. Ev in class were hard bodied and quite skilled ( Gracias for noticing me. Next time, stay focused ) which made me feel proud for keeping up. Skilled, i am. Hardbodied i am not.
*1.5 hours! I used to dream of such a long yoga class.
* The donation system is a dream come true.
The cons:
*A bit too non-stop/Cardio. It made the breathing aspect hard to do right. And then when we got balancing, which usually I am supa-fly at, I was so lightheaded and worn out that I didn't balance too well! We needed a little rest/ water and a transition into the balancing poses. I actually never got to sip my water once in the 90 minutes ( that's the idea, don't kill the "agni") and had to cheat some poses in order to towel off.
*And not enough balancing/ fun/ interesting poses. I was hoping to learn some new poses, balance quite a bit. I was suprised that in an hour and half we didn't get as much variety, pose-wise, as I would have liked. ( Sara, the more challenging classes are Level 3-4, Jerome's 7 AM class or when Vytas feels there are enough advanced students in the room )
*crowded ( See advanced class comment above, more selective )
* parking was a bitch.( try the Library lot next time )
Would go back again. Maybe mix it up with diff instructors...
Namaste, yelpers!
