LD: Practicing empathy is a big one; one of the biggest barriers to peace is judging. Instead of resisting and judging and shutting down I can try to relate to people and see my humanity in them. That helps me accept them as they are.
Practicing acceptance is an extension of that. It’s tempting to resist what is. I think we all have expectations of how things are going to go, how we want them to go, and how we hope they’re going to turn out. It can be tempting to resist, to kind of shut down and fight what is. Practicing acceptance and kind of telling myself, “Ok, it is what it is, so knowing this what’s the wisest thing I can do now?” That’s something that helps me create peace.
Self-empathy is another one. I know historically in my past I’ve had a history of getting down on myself, feeling like I should have known better, done better. It’s very easy to get caught in that cycle and then before I know it I’m also getting down on myself for getting down on myself…I can just take a deep breath and forgive myself and just let myself be.
Acting with integrity. That’s a big one for me; if I can feel proud of what I’m doing…that’s a big one for me.
I often pretend it’s my last day on earth. It sounds crazy, I know…but you just don’t know. We’re fragile. And when I think about that it really helps me to feel grateful for the moment I’m in.
