Our biggest fear

Posted Aug 14 2008 7:02pm 2 Comments

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

I love this quote and I've been seeing it around everywhere! I think that my greatest fear for a long time was being visible and vulnerable, and I believe that has a lot to do with Williamson's assertion that we fear our own power (especially women). I think that it's a matter of becoming attuned to who we are and understanding how our unique qualities can contribute to a better world. I've been combatting a lot of negative self-talk that has plagued me over the years, for instance; it's so "natural" to be self-deprecating or to deny the compliments people give us, but now I've experimented with being more gracious in my acceptance of the goodness that flows into my life.
Well, I am glad you found the quote uplifting. I heard it in the movie about the black girl who wins the spelling bee contest and was inspired. I think this quote is about self empowerment and how that can empower others to be the same. I think we deal with this daily, as the natural tendency is to either self depricate or be depricated by others who use that as a way to empower themselves. With my yoga practice and what I learn and self learn I have realized that the best way to empower yourself is to detach and be indifferent to such emotions that result from deprication etc. I think its great to feel elated when goodness flows.. its good emotions, but we also can become addicted to those feelings including the negative feelings and feelings of self deprecation. Addiction of any sort is not good for our body, mind or spirit. Its unhealthy.. The self empowerment lies in the neutrality
