“YOGA FOR NEW YORK’S BENEFIT PARTY”
A Benefit Event supporting Yoga that you simply will not want to miss!
Thursday, January 21st, 2010, 6:30-8:30 PM
January 11, 2010–New York State is attempting to license yoga teacher training programs, which affects all who love yoga. In May 2009, The New York State Education Department sent out letters to yoga studios stating that their teacher training programs needed to be licensed or suspended. Without a license, these studios would be subjected to fines up to $50,000 and other fees, guidelines and taxes. While the licensing requirements have been temporarily suspended, the issue lives on, with a bill to be presented to New York’s legislature in the new session.
Without strong training programs, yoga lovers would find it difficult to find classes with qualified instructors. Studios that rely on training fees would close, hurting their staff members, landlords and suppliers. The entire yoga community would suffer.
Yoga for New York members and friends are redoubling their efforts to get the legislation passed to make the suspension of licensing permanent. Yoga for NY needs the support of everyone interested in Yoga. The issue is far from over. The State has made clear that it will suspend licensing only pending passage of new legislation exempting Yoga Teacher Trainings. “We are not against consumer protection, which this licensing is about. We are just against the undue burdens of licensing in NY State and the toll it would take on our community.” (Alison West, Executive Director of Yoga for NY).
