Mixed Yoga Bag: Holiday Gifts, Yoga Local NYC App, & an NYC Benefit to Fight Yoga State Licensing

Posted Dec 23 2009 10:50am

Since I'm drastically limiting my computer time this holiday season, I'm going to keep this blog post short and sweet. I hope you're all doing the same -- spending more time with the three-dimensional people than the computer (it can be tough to pull yourself away, I know). Right now I'm relaxing in my delightfully soft Tottie Bean yoga pants (whoa, are these comfy!) listening to the strains of classic Christmas tunes (gotta love Johnny Mathis) in the background. The lights of the tree are winking at me from below (I'm in the upstairs loft space), and the mountain view just outside the window is one that I never tire of.

Before I enjoy a late lunch with my family, I wanted to share a few yoga highlights:

  • I know it's a wee bit late to offer up more holiday gift suggestions, but I wanted to share the very cool Mind Body Green Holiday Gift Guide. The gift suggestions are more than appropriate for gift-giving throughout the year. And if you got some cash in your stocking this Christmas, this extensive guide will inspire you to splurge on yourself.
  • Every time I suggest an iPhone/iPod Touch app, I can't help but here the words from the Apple marketing campaign in my head -- "there's an app for that." Apparently, there are plenty of apps for us yoga fans. Two new additions are YogaLocal NYC (versions for Los Angeles and San Francisco are coming soon) and iPromise from one of my favorite yoga teachers, Mark Whitwell. YogaLocal lists local yoga studios (and class schedules) based on your GPS location and goes above and beyond a yoga class-finder app by offering a yoga news feature, which provides links to yoga articles from blogs, Web sites, journals, and other sources. The app is one of the more comprehensive I've seen, as it covers all 5 boroughs and lists information such as teacher bios.  iPromise from Yoga of Heart author Mark Whitwell offers a 7-minute practice that promises optimal health, love, and sex. This app encapsulates Mark's wonderful teachings and offers fans a short but powerful daily practice.
  • If you find yourself with some extra time on your hands this holiday and want to get away from the traditional sit on the couch and watch TV habit, I highly recommend the fantastic audio interviews on the Abundant Yogi site. The site features over 12 interviews with yoga trailblazers, personal coaches, holistic practitioners and fascinating people with lots of knowledge to share. You can listen online or download the interviews (each run about an hour long) to your MP3 player.
  • Attention all New Yorkers who want to keep yoga free from government regulation -- Yoga for New York is holding a benefit on Thursday, January 21, 2010 to fight licensing in NY state so mark your calendars. Here are all the details:
