It is contortionism that facilitates flexibility, not yoga. Yoga is an immense body of wisdom for human development. One tiny sliver of that wisdom involves a physical practice (asana or postures). However, even the practice of asana is not inherently designed to facilitate flexibility in the practitioner. The postures are only a tool for self-discovery.
Through the practice of asana one may become more flexible AND more stabile. There isn't a set of poses that will uniformly meet your need in a safe manner.
