Do we have free will?

Posted by Dada V. Healthy Living Professional

In the West this is a hot topic of debate among philosophers and among common people. Can we influence our destiny or is everything decided before hand by a higher power?

I have already written extensively on the matter and you can go and read about it, but now I want to present it from the another angle. There is an old saying “Man proposes and God disposes.” So often our best laid plans do not come to fruition, despite hard work and good intentions.

In the field of devotional yoga (bhakti yoga) there is an important concept that deals with this. It is called Prapatti, and it means that whatever happens, happens according to the will of God. Not even a blade of grass can move without having the backing of the Cosmic will.

Understanding this, then the best way to be successful is to align your will with the cosmic will. Instead of swimming against a river learn how to find the cosmic flow and go with it. And that is what spiritual practice (yoga, meditation) is all about, getting in tune with that Cosmic flow.

I think we have the choice. One choice will work out for us, because it is, as you stated, aligned with the cosmic will. The other choices will lead to dead ends because we are trying to make something happen that is not slated for us.
That is a beautiful way of looking at yoga. Having studied philosophy in university, I am always intrigued by any discussion of it. I believe that God knows what will happen to us and He lets us decide for ourselves what we will do. That is a sort of free will with consequences that God will not change for us. What you're saying makes sense to me in this way: finding peace within ourselves through yoga and ultimately cleansing our minds will lead us to make good choices for ourselves, indeed aligning ourselves with what is meant to be.
Great topic. Hmm. I have to think about this.... Well, here are my thoughts. I am not sure if God is this great man up in the sky. I think God is just Everything and we are part of that Everything. Therefore, following God's will is ultimately following my own will. The point of meditation is to get in touch with your own inner knowing so that you follow your soul's calling. When I do that I get synchronicity in my life. In fact, I was at a gong meditation last night and the message I got was "no fighting, no forcing, just flow." I think this is what you are talking about here.
I will let it be a bit ambiguous, and let's see what others think about this topic.

In a dualistic framework both free will and "destiny" may coexist. And I suppose even a conversation of that would warrant some definition of terms.

But we are not, as beings, very cozy with the stark, blatant eventualities of our existence in the physical body (read: death). So how then could we expect ourselves to be cozy with the subtleties?

I'm with Stephanie--I don't really see a difference between one's own will and "God's will." I think everyone has free will, circumscribed by the bounds of their experience, of course. But like Stephanie mentioned, I think being aligned with cosmic will enables us to flow more with life rather than imposing our will on it in a forceful or destructive way.
