A Yoga Lesson From Judith Hanson Lasater

Posted Dec 04 08 4:01pm
Long before I knew that Judith Hanson Lasater was one of the founders of Yoga Journal, I was a fan. It was her wisdom-packed book -- Living Your Yoga -- that got me. I've been a fan ever since. Just last month, Lasater was interviewed in Yoga Journal and offered up some words about yoga and the practice of yoga that lit me up and I wanted to share:

"Follow your nature. The practice is really about uncovering your own pose; we have great respect for our teachers, but unless we can uncover our own pose in the moment, it's not practice -- it's mimicry. Rest deeply in Savasana every day. Always enter that pratyahara (withdrawn state) every day. And just enjoy yourself. For many years I mistook discipline as ambition. Now I believe it to be more about consistency. Do get on the mat. Practice and life are not that different."

I think it's helpful to remember these words and especially helpful around this time of year when things can get hectic. I'm heading off for a savasana rest right now. I'll be back tomorrow with the 2008 gift guide. Until then, take Lasater's advice and enjoy yourself!

Namaste!
