The Secret to Success in Life, Jim Kouzes, Keynote, The Leadership Challenge Forum 2008

LiveBlogging from the Keynote This is not the same secret as the book "The Secret". "When it comes to choosing a life path, you should do what you love--because if you don't love it, you are unlikely to work hard enough to get very good." - K. Anders Ericsson.
You have to ask: Do you love it enough to get really good at it? If they don't say yes, then don't bother. You'll be working harder than they will. As General Eric Shinseki says, "You must love those who lead before you can be an effective leader. You can certainly command without that sense of commitment, but you cannot lead without it . . ."
How do we develop better leaders at a university or army or corporate or educational institution: Whenever anyone asks me that question, tell them the secret to success in life: "Stay in Love." I don't know any other thing or any other fire more than love. The people who are the best they can be: it is not an affair of the head, it is an affair of the heart.
One final message: Love 'em and Lead 'em.
I hope we've done a bit to challenge how you think about leadership.
