One Path to Wellness: Health Coaching

Posted Mar 04 2009 2:08pm
You can't watch television without being bombarded by prescription drug ads. With all the emphasis on treating disease, it feels as if health care is supposed to begin and end at the pharmacy.

An article published last week challenges that notion. As one doctor put it, "Health is more than the absence of disease." In the corporate world, that clearly means emphasizing overall wellness and prevention. The question is, how?

The article describes a technique we often suggest for our corporate clients:  coaching. Top medical centers have started using health coaches to work one-on-one with patients, and the results are compelling. In one study, "people who received health coaching were exercising 3.7 days a week--two days a week more than when they started--and had an average 10-point drop in cholesterol." The group receiving just standard checkups "barely budged."

While it certainly can't replace traditional medical treatment, coaching does provide motivation--one of the keys to long-term success. Many of our clients have found that offering one-on-one coaching for their employees has improved participation and retention rates.

So what keeps you motivated? Leave a comment and tell us your story!
