If you're planning to travel over this holiday weekend, you probably expect to face a little travel-induced stress. After all, long lines at the airport and crowded interstates are just part of the holiday ritual, and we generally take them in stride.
But for some of your employees, travel stress may a daily occurrence. Back in 2005, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the average American spent more than 100 hours commuting to work each year, and I'm sure that number has only increased since. Here in the Washington, D.C. area, traffic conditions are a constant source of headaches for residents.
Over at the HR Morning blog, Christian Schappel has identified three "hidden health risks" of long commutes: higher rates of obesity, increased stress, and decreased productivity. But there is good news: A robust wellness program is the best antidote for the stress of commuting.
