Jump Start Your Workout This Spring

Posted Apr 20 2010 12:00am
When we design wellness programs for our corporate clients, encouraging long-term participation is always our goal--but it can be a challenge. Although employees are usually excited and motivated in the beginning, we all know how easy it is to fall back into familiar behavior patterns.

We've found that one of the best ways to keep people engaged is to use the calendar--the National Health Observances calendar, or simply the change of seasons--to keep wellness top of mind. To that end, we thought we'd offer some tips for "spring cleaning" your workout. Why not pass them on to your employees?
  1. Is it time for a new pair of exercise shoes? Workout shoes should be replaced every three to six months (more often for runners, less often for those you wear to the gym). New shoes offer better support and stability, reducing your risk of injury.
  2. Consider buying some new exercise clothes. The new synthetic materials available now are great for outdoor exercise because they're more breathable. Spring is a great time to go through last year's clothing and see what needs to be replaced.
  3. Get a BPA-free water bottle. Many older water bottles contain the chemical BPA, which may lead to health risks. Check out our friend Tara Parker-Pope's blog at the New York Times for more information.
  4. Find an exercise partner. There's nothing more important than having an exercise partner who can keep you accountable. Find a friend with similar health goals and a compatible schedule and work out together.
  5. Track your workouts with new technology. If you have a smartphone, there are many health applications available that can track your activity, calories burned and consumed, and more. Our program managers are currently testing the Fitbit device, and so far they're impressed!
Now that the weather is improving, do you feel more motivated to exercise? Leave a comment below and tell me about your spring exercise routine.
