A new University of Illinois study found that moderate amounts of exercise can reduce the amount of belly fat. Belly fat or visceral fat has been linked with metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors that predict heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Belly fat is particularly dangerous because it produces inflammatory molecules that enter the bloodstream and increase the risk of heart disease and diabetes. In this study, moderate exercise was used to obtain results for a period of 6 to 12 weeks. The researchers are suggesting 30-45 minutes three to five days per week would be beneficial to reduce the amount of abdominal fat and the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
