why would i need a ultasound done for a enlarged thyroid

First you should get a TSH blood test completed to determine if your thyroid is either over or under active.  Then you get an ultrasound to see if there are any cysts or nodules.  Next you'll need some nuclear imaging to evaluate whether said cysts & nodules are active or not.  Finally, you can then consider a biopsy to further evaluate said cysts & nodules to be sure there's no cancer anywhere.  Hope this helps!  Good luck!
