Why does my right foot curve to the left when I have a leg and foot cramp?

I had a cramp last night and it started in the under side of my knee and went all the way down to my foot. My foot curved to the left and when I was able to walk, I had to use the side of my foot because my foot was curved. Why and what causes this to happen?
