What treatments can we do to reduce eye swelling? Is it necessary to call a doctor?

Yesterday, my wife started having trouble with her eyes. She had been wearing contacts a couple of hours. By the end of the evening, her eye was swollen and she could barely keep her (right) eyelid open. It seems to be getting worse.
