What Causes Hair Loss for Women - Some Basics

Posted Aug 07 2009 11:54am

Men and women shed at least 100- 125 strands of hair per day and have it replaced after 2- 3 months with new hair growth.

Although it is a natural occurrence women do not want to accept it as normal because it is expected that they have thick, luxurious, healthy hair. Hair health really matters to women.

Hair loss in women differs from hair loss in men. Women usually do not have the noticeable receding hairlines like that of men. There is not a set pattern for hair loss in women. Hair loss in women is mainly caused by Alopecia, the natural thinning of hair because of heredity.

A few common causes of hair loss in women are:

  • Childbirth - After childbirth women naturally lose hair because of hormonal imbalances. This may take only three months after childbirth. This is temporary and nothing to worry about, but women do take this seriously and it is embarrassing for them having thinning, unhealthy looking hair.
  • Menopause hormonal treatment - Menopause cause imbalances in women's hormonal levels and brings with it the usual symptoms such as hot flushes, headaches, mood swings, vaginal dryness, painful sex and so on.

To remedy these they take treatments to maintain hormonal balances and lessen the menopausal symptoms. Usually they take progesterone, a female hormone needed, but unfortunately inhibit the development of new follicles.
  • Hormones - Hormonal imbalance can cause hair loss in women. Over active or an under active thyroid glands are usually associated with hair loss and can be improved by treating the thyroid glands. Another factor associated with women's hair loss is estrogen imbalance which can be corrected.

Vitamins to Slow Hair Loss in Females

It is well known that women of all ages should take vitamins for their health however it seems that not all women know that a lack of vitamins can affect the health of their hair. Lack of iron, zinc, and B vitamins may cause hair loss in women.

A standard multi-vitamin or natural supplement designed for hair loss can provide the correct amounts of these vitamins that may be missing from many women's diets. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential hair building blocks. If you are not currently taking an Omega-3 supplement you will need to consume more fish, nuts or olive oil.
  • A person with protein deficiency may also notice an increase in hair loss. For women who don't get enough protein the body will cut the supply off to the hair in order to get it to other parts of the body.
  • Vitamin A is another essential part of healthy hair, it has been found to support the healthy development of tissues and cells in the body. It promotes healthy hair follicles by keeping the root of the hair lubricated. A healthy scalp is also essential to healthy hair.
  • Vitamin E supports a healthy scalp by helping to increase the oxygen supplied through the blood.
  • The B vitamins are also important for hair health. A vitamin B deficiency would damage the hair and scalp by limiting the amount of oxygen they receive. A proper diet and a natural supplement that contains these vitamins will help slow hair loss.

Advecia and Hair loss

Advecia is an all natural product that was designed to help slow hair loss in both men and women and can be taken along with a multi vitamin such as Balance Point for Women which contains the above mentioned vitamins.
