Watching Movies and Reading Are Good Stress Relievers

Posted May 29 2009 12:00am

When life is more stressful, people need an escape. With the economy the way it is and people not wanting to spend a lot of money, romance novel sales are up dramatically this year over last. Experts are attributing the growth to the poor economy. Movie attendance and alcohol sales are also up which is normally seen in an economic downturn. Romance novels are affordable and you can easily get them from the library or purchase them used. It also allows people to use their creativity to set the scene which lowers stress levels. Movies are also a low cost escape for a few hours of freedom from your stress and offers good entertainment. Reading books and watching movies are good coping mechanisms to take yourself out of a situation short-term and give yourself a break so you can re-charge. Although alcohol sales are up, using alcohol to drown your sorrows is not generally seen as a good coping mechanism for chronic stress as it can cause greater depression about your circumstances along with a negative impact on the body. So if you are feeling stressed, watch a movie or read that book you’ve always wanted to read but never had the time. It will do you good.
