"Too Tall" Girls and DES

Posted May 29 2009 10:16pm
At 14, Christine Cosgrove's mother was told by the family doctor that she was getting "too tall for a woman. By that he meant that I would grow too tall to be happy, too tall to fit in, too tall to find a man." The answer was injections of diethylstilbestrol, or DES, a synthetic chemical compound that acts like estrogen in the body. At the time, relates Christine in this LA Times article, the injections to stunt her growth were an improvement over the other "therapies" for tallness, which involved calorie restriction. Don't believe this happened? Read her story and about the side effects women here and in other countries, like Australia, are experiencing now that they are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.
