The treatment of osteoporosis in elderly patients can significantly reduce mortality rare, because each fracture can be fatal in this category of patients.Osteoporosis is a disease which is characterized by bone thinning. This leads to a high risk of fractures This disease is more common in women than in men, however men are predisposed to the disease as well. The most of fractures associated with this disease occur in the hip, spine, and wrist.
In total, the meta-analysis included 10 studies with a total number of participants - 39 549.There were registered 1417 number of death.Women in the period after menopause participated in 9 studies, in 1 clinical study participated men.The following drugs were used in the treatment: risedronate, zoledronic acid, denosumab, alendronate, strontium ranelate. In general, the mortality rate was reduced by 12% in patients who received osteoporosis treatment. The results of this analysis will be used as strong evidence that those people which are at high risk of fractures, especially elderly patients, are in great need of effective osteoporosis treatment.
