The Many Health Benefits of Tea

A multitude of studies have been done on tea to test the health properties of green, oolong and black teas. Extremely promising results have been reported for many health issues, read on. Just recently, a study published by the Institute of Food Technologists researched the polysaccharide levels of green, oolong and black teas and whether they could be used to treat diabetes. Polysaccharides, a type of carbohydrate that includes starch and cellulose, may benefit people with diabetes because they help retard absorption of glucose. The researchers found that of the three teas, the polysaccharides in black tea had the most glucose-inhibiting properties. More work will be done but wouldn’t this be a great treatment or prevention as obesity and type II diabetes soars in the U.S.

Also, the black tea polysaccharides also showed the highest scavenging effect on free radicals, which are involved in the onset of diseases such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, there is also some evidence that regularly drinking green tea may reduce heart attack risk or atherosclerosis. Studies are limited, but a recent one found that older adults in Japan who drank green tea daily showed less risk of memory difficulty, compared with those who didn’t drink tea regularly. One of the most interesting studies suggests that drinking black tea may speed up recovery from the daily stresses in life. It also has a powerful effect in bringing stress hormone levels back to normal. In our society now with everyone stressed out, I think everyone needs a little tea.
