The Best Vitamins For Healthy Hair And Scalp

Posted Jun 11 2011 12:35pm

There are many products on the market today that claim to help you grow hair faster or give you a thicker head of healthy looking hair. The reality is that if you want a full head of beautiful hair and a healthy scalp you need to eat a well-balanced diet with emphasis on the best vitamins for hair. These vitamins will do this by improving your immune system, improving circulation and preventing hair loss.

The first vitamin we are going to look at is vitamin A. In order to have a healthy head of hair you need to first take care of your scalp. You do not want your scalp to become dry and unhealthy. Vitamin A does this by promoting the secretion of oil called sebum. This is produced by glands in your scalp. There are many foods that are high in this vitamin. They would include fish, meat, eggs, carrots and green vegetables.

There are several B vitamins that are essential to the health of your hair and scalp. Vitamin B12 can is important in preventing hair loss. In order to improve circulation it is important to have vitamin B3. You will also hear this referred to as niacin at times. B5 and B6 are also important in the prevention of hair loss. It should be noted that the B-complex vitamins are what we call water soluble vitamins. This means that they are not stored in the body and have to be replaced. Some foods that are high in B vitamins are whole grain cereals, chicken, fish and egg yolks.

Biotin is also a B-Complex vitamin that can improve the health of your hair and scalp. You hear claims of different products containing biotin to improve hair health. The truth is that being a water soluble vitamin biotin is not absorbed through the skin. This is more about marketing than it is about your health. Save your money and get this vitamin from foods such as lentils, sunflower seeds or brown rice. There are also some excellent biotin supplements that you can readily purchase.

We have all heard that vitamin C can be used to boost your immune system and fight colds and flu. But this vitamin is also an antioxidant that can promote healthy hair as well as skin. Foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes and green peppers are very good sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin E has a positive effect on the health of your hair in two ways. First it improves the amount of oxygen being carried by the blood which in turn improves circulation to your scalp and secondly by enhancing your immune system. Foods high in vitamin E would include nuts, green leafy vegetables and beans.
