There is nothing that says women’s wedding rings must be made of gold; it is simply a tradition. There is even an old Irish superstition that says it is bad luck, even illegal to get married with anything other than a gold wedding ring. Of course, most religious ceremonies make no mention of metal choice, which may be why other metals are finally catching on.
Though gold is still the most popular choice for wedding rings for women, platinum is a close second. In fact, platinum has long been seen as the more elegant and prestigious option, since it is much rarer (about 30 times) than gold. Most jewelers also consider wedding rings like the Platinum Wedding Ring with Satin Finish and Beveled Edges to be superior to gold versions.
Which is best?
Most brides-to-be couldn’t care less about tradition or superstition. However, they do want their wedding bands to match their engagement rings, since they are worn on the same finger of the same hand. This may also be the reason why platinum has gained a loyal following in recent years.
As traditional as it is, gold does not work well with clear diamonds, which are the most common stones used in engagement rings. The warm yellow color tends to give clear diamonds an unattractive yellow tint, which is why many modern brides are switching to platinum rings like the Platinum Wedding Ring with Satin Finished Raised Center.
