Sunday Night Roundup: Doggie Style

Sunday Night Roundup 11.24.2013

When you first adopt a dog, there is always a huge trip to a pet store to buy EVERYTHING that the munchkin needs – and the need to get everything immediately can sometimes lead to some weird choices.  Among other issues, Bea’s first bed is hideous and she didn’t find it all that comfortable, and her food bowls were for a 60 pound dog (she weighs 18 pounds). Oops.

I am fully aware that my dogs would be happy living in a tent as long as they could be with us and that they wouldn’t know the difference if they were drinking water out of the toilet or a fancy dog bowl.  But I think a lot of the fun in having a pet is spoiling it, anthropomorphizing it, and giving it pretty things so you can enjoy them enjoying themselves (while ignoring the fact that they wouldn’t know the difference).  It makes me happy when Bea and Mitch wear their matching sweaters (I swear they do actually need them).

I used to pride myself on having a neat, minimalist, and organized living space.  Then we adopted dogs, and my cool clean space was replaced by a space that was obviously occupied by at least one four-legged furry domesticated animal.  Dog beds, crates, food bowls, none of those things are particularly attractive.  I wish I could go on a home design show where  HGTV would swoop in with smart design that was both accommodating to my aesthetic and my dogs’ desires to lounge around all day and occasionally play with toys.

Eventually I will probably replace their current stuff with things that fit in our new home a bit more and there is a LOT of really cute stuff out there.  Most is absurdly expensive, and I plan to DIY and Target a bunch of it.  I may love my dogs, but I’m not going to spend $80 on food bowls.

Tip:  many of these items are available on  Joss & Main , a home sample sale site that’s owned by Wayfair.com .  So if you see something you like that’s priced to sell on Joss & Main, head over to Wayfair where you can find reviews on that item before you decide to take the plunge!
