A very interesting study by the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut in the U.S. studied 41,218 adults and found that overweight and obese people have more stress in their lives. It has not been determined whether the stress causes overweight or obesity or whether the overweight/obesity causes stress. It was also documented that overweight people were discriminated against more than thin people. They are more likely to lose their jobs (especially women) , be a victim of crime or actually be a criminal. It is suggested that the low self-esteem that comes along with being overweight allows them to be an easier victim of crime. Obesity is also linked to poverty which in turn is linked to crime, which may explain why so many get into trouble with the law or become victims of crime.
