my virginia has been itchy since i started my period 3 days ago. why?

my virginia is being really irritatingly itchy since i started my period 3 days ago and it sometimes feels sore especially when i urinate. why is this? should i see a doctor? am getting really worried as this is the first time something of the sort has occurred
