For years now there has been controversy over low calorie sweeteners and their effect on weight. A new study published in the International Journal of Obesity reports that consumption of beverages sweetened with low calorie sweeteners actually increases dietary restraint. The study also suggested they may be a key aspect of successful long-term weight maintenance for those that have lost weight. The low calorie beverages are a tool to help people manage and lessen their daily calorie intake. This study reinforces the results from a 2002 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which found those that used sugar substitutes had significantly greater weight loss compared with participants who did not consume them. Right now, more than 194 million Americans are consuming low and reduced calorie foods and beverages.
