Have you ever achieved a health or wellness goal that went beyond your wildest dream?
If someone had told me two years ago that I would ride my bike around beautiful Lake Tahoe, I would have answered tongue-in-cheek, “You mean on my Schwinn?”. But, like most novice riders who sign up for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training rides, the impossible happens with the help of a network of coaches and a community of riders “like you”. Yes, it takes training but the inspiration you receive from others working towards a common goal is jet-fuel for action. And, while two years ago I accomplished my goal of riding a century around Lake Tahoe, it was even more of a thrill this year to support new riders (hey, I checked it off my bucket list!) and friends so they too could experience something quite extraordinary – raise $5 million this year to fund research for blood cancers.
Research shows that health behaviors can change with the influence of others “like us” as we shift our actions to fuel our need for belonging. Ed Keller and Brad Fay, co-authors of the best-selling business book, The Influentials, as well as a new book “The Face-to-Face Book”, notes that influence is related to our natural instincts to mimic those who we surround ourselves with. As a business book with a focus on digital marketing, it supports how organizations, like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, make societal changes through community-based relationships – outside the limitations of a digital world.
When I think about the power of community to change health and change lives, I’m convinced that when we’re connected to a larger purpose, smaller more everyday changes in our life becomes easier. It’s all about purpose and context. and our ability to both empower others to reach their goals.
