Hmmm . . . your question trailed off but sounds like your menstrual cycle has changed recently.  Most likely, given your age, this is due to peri-mentrual changes in your hormones.  In other words, you might be entering menopause.  Of course, weight change and thyroid dysfunction can also lead to changes in your menstrual cycle.  I would be remiss if I didn't mention malignancy (cancer) but that's low down on the list given your age.  Still, it would be a good idea to go in for your annual gyn exam and mention this to your family physician.

A Pap smear would be reasonable to look for cervical issues.  A bimanual exam would be helpful to assess the size & shape of your uterus (and ovaries).  While there, an endometrial biopsy could be performed quite easily and relatively painlessly (this coming from a guy who's performed many but has never personally experienced one).  Some might substitute a D&C for the endometrial biopsy in order to get more tissue sample for analysis.

Hormone blood work (TSH, LH, FSH, etc) as well as weight & height measurement to determine your body mass index (BMI).  Most likely, your physician will order a (transvaginal) pelvic ultrasound to evaluate the thickness of your endometrial lining and to look for fibroids as another source of bleeding.

By the way, changes in hormonal contraception can also lead to heavy (or no) menses.  Hope this helps.  Good luck!
