I’m Stressed! What Should I Eat or Not Eat?

Posted Oct 21 2008 12:00am

There are some foods to avoid when you are stressed that may compound your situation and make you feel worse. By avoiding these foods you may help yourself to naturally feel better and less stressed or to recover more quickly from the stress.

  • Caffeinated drinks
  • Chocolate
  • Junk foods and fast foods
  • Egg yolks, butter, cheese, shrimp, coconut oil, nuts
  • Carbonated beverages
  • High sugar/high fat junk foods
  • Alcohol

Tea, coffee, cocoa including chocolate drinks contain stimulants like caffeine. Although caffeine will wake you up, it is better to avoid it during stress. Caffeine will worsen anxiety and sleeplessness and may increase blood pressure. In addition, tea and coffee worsen peptic ulcers associated with stress.

Egg yolks, butter, cheese, coconut oil nuts and shrimp contain high levels of cholesterol and should be avoided during stress since stress increases the body’s cholesterol levels.

High fat and sugar junk foods contain empty calories but no nutritional content. There is no protein, vitamins or minerals to add back to the body. Stress depletes vitamins and minerals and a balanced diet can help fight the stress more effectively.

Carbonated beverages contain high levels of carbon dioxide. Stress causes an accumulation of carbon dioxide and lactates resulting in a condition called acidosis which is detrimental to health.

Alcohol produces physiological stress on the body. Some of the body’s responses to alcohol are similar to its responses to other stressors and therefore, may compound the stressful situation making it seem worse.
