Hypoglycemia

Posted Oct 19 2008 11:15am
Well, I did it. I bought a glucometer to start checking my sugars. I've been having low blood sugar symptoms for the past 6 months or so, after being symptom free for a year after gastric bypass.

I definitely -- MUST -- get out of bad breakfast habits. Coffee with fat free creamer, oh how I love thee! But you wreck havoc with my blood sugar for hours.

This morning:

0900 - coffee with non fat creamer, 2 mini chocolate donuts (yes, I HAVE to stop doing those sugar carbs too)

1130 - felt like my blood sugar was crashing after taking a shower. Blood sugar = 49. My hands are shaking so bad, I have to stick myself twice to get an adequate drop of blood. I make myself eat (I'm not hungry) - leftover manicotti with fat-free ricotta cheese. A thin slice of buttered bread. A glass of 2% milk.

1200 - feeling better. Recheck blood sugar = 120.

1300 - feeling it drop again. Don't check sugar. Go right for food. One bite of pretzel. Make 1/2 sandwich - cheese, salami, mustard. Sip some water.

1320 - feeling better. Have only eaten about 2/3 of the 1/2 sandwich. Blogging about blood glucose levels.

**sigh**

I feel like I am eating all the time, when my sugar dips. This will end up carrying over into my shift this evening, eating mini-meals all evening long.
