Hypertension Can Be a Killer For Overweight/Obese Children Too

Benicar, a drug used to treat hypertension in adults, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat the same condition in children aged 6 to 16. In the U.S. now, 3.6 million children in the United States have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, a number that’s risen in tandem with children’s weight. There may be many more than have not been diagnosed yet. Obese children are three times more likely to have hypertension than non-obese kids. I have seen this in my practice many times, where normal, healthy children who are 30 pounds overweight have blood pressures of 160/120 and the parents did not have a clue. This a real concern for overweight and obese children. If your child is overweight, get his/her blood pressure taken.
