AlterNet has an excellent selection from Joel Berg's book "All You Can Eat: How Hungry Is America" which describes the hidden yet pervasive problem Americans face daily, monthly, seasonally of getting enough to eat, with a combination of compassion, irony, and statistics to help us get our brains around the reality of hunger here at home. By the way, the government has renamed hunger "food insecurity" and it affects 35 million of us, roughly the population of California.
