Dutchess County Victim Service Providers ignore and overly refer local domestic violence victim/mother

Posted Jun 22 2011 12:06pm
Tri-County Crisis Center, Inc. has been assisting local Dutchess County mom for nearly 2 months. This woman has been through the system and spit out, left with an on going custody battle for her child who resides with a rapist/abuser and no services in the area to help her. Local mom reached out to every agency in the local area and state: Battered Women's Services, The Citizens Advisory Committee for DV, LSHV, NYS Coalition, the OPDV, the Bar Association, Dutchess Outreach, and the United Way, as well as the PD, Grace Smith House, the local legislature and Senator Saland and Assemblyman Joel Miller.

Not one agnency has offered any real solutions and all have re-referred her to the same places she has already been to for help. Tri-County Crisis Center, Inc. welcomes tough cases, high risk cases, the cases that all other agencies pass along like hot potatoes. Victims need help, lawyers, resources, counseling, and transportation. Local mom should be able to receive some services, but after reaching out, only a handful have responded and the response was pitiful.

Tri-County Crisis Center, Inc. has been able to get local mom free legal advice, which is something she should have been given through local victim service providers in the area. Through volunteer efforts and "time", TCCC is picking this case apart and making a bit of headway. When other VSPs pass the victim off and ignore, we pick victims up and try to get resources to work.

After many, many homicides in Dutchess County, local mom should be acknowledged and assisted in a timely manner. There is no excuse for the endless referrals and the lack of assistance we have been seeing from local agencies that take all the funding, leaving so many behind.

Today, this victim was even unable to get transportation to a legal office-so we took her. This is unacceptable and needs to be addressed immediately by the county and state. We MUST be able to at least get victims basic resources like a cab ride, counseling, and a lawyer. NO EXCUSES. TCCC is operating on NO FUNDS and has been able to do more than large, funded VSPs.

Dutchess County-GET IT TOGETHER and show us where the money for victims is going.
