Breast Lift with Implants - What You Can Expect

Posted May 13 2013 5:31am

Breast lift with implants combines the two procedures breast lift and breast augmentation. This is known as augmentation mastopexy. In this effective procedure, breast implants are used to augment the breasts and this is combined with a breast lift to shape and lift sagging breasts to give them a youthful look.  It ensures a dramatic improvement in the appearance, correcting issues such as stretched out skin and tissue, and downward pointing areola and nipple. A youthful and perky bust line can definitely be recaptured with a breast lift. At the same time breast enhancement ensures more volume for the breasts.

Breast Lift with Implants – Are You a Candidate?

You can consider breast lift with implants if:

 >> The breasts are pendulous
 >> If they lack firmness and substance
 >> If the areola and nipple point downwards

Sometimes, these conditions are inherited. In several cases, one breast is well-positioned and firm, while the other is not. Differences may be noticed in the shape as well as the size of breasts.

What the Procedure Involves

In breast augmentation, the plastic surgeon would utilize FDA approved breast implants for adding increased size and fullness to breasts. Saline or silicone implants may be used for the augmentation. The implants come in various textures, shapes and sizes. Different sizes are available to suit individual requirements. They are available in oval or round shape with different projection levels for aligning naturally with your physique. You can discuss implant choices and other details with your plastic surgeon during consultation. This includes whether breast lift can be done with implant augmentation.

Usually, the surgeon would perform both procedures in a single session, or choose to perform them in two stages. First, breast augmentation is carried out to restore fullness to the breasts and increase their size. Breast lift is provided after the augmentation using techniques such as the periareolar technique in which the incision is made around the areola; or the surgeon may go for an inverted T technique where the incision is shaped like an anchor. Excess skin and tissue are removed to lift and reshape the breasts. Once the surgery is over, your surgeon would close the incisions with sutures, skin adhesive and/or surgical tape.

What to Expect after the Surgery

Breast lift with implants involves a slightly longer recovery time than when the two procedures are performed alone. Your surgeon may provide you with a special surgical bra to wear during the recovery period, which will aid speedy recovery. Swelling, bruising and pain may occur, but these usually subside within a few weeks. You may also be given pain medications to keep away discomfort. The sutures are removed after ten days.Any scars from the procedure fade in a year or so.

Possible Risks

Widely acclaimed as a safe procedure, in rare cases there may be side effects such as hematoma, changes in nipple sensation, seroma, capsular contracture, scarring, implant rupture, prolonged healing, and inadequate cosmetic outcome. But you need not be concerned about such risks if you are having the procedure done by a reliable plastic surgeon.
