Psychologists and neuroscientists explain what's behind the human tendency to judge and categorize people, using the example of talent surprise Susan Boyle, the frumpy spinster with the lovely voice who startled American Idol judges recently. The NYT article notes that racial and ethnic stereotypes are easier to change over time than attitudes which devalue people on the basis of gender and age.
