Abdominal pain - again

Posted Aug 23 2008 3:13pm
I don't think I've really said much about it, but I've been having abdominal pain again - very similar to the pain I was having before I had my gallbladder removed (and two hernias repaired, and adhesions fixed).

I've had the pain, intermittently, for the past two months. This past weekend was horrible though - worse pain ever. I felt like something was tearing inside, on my left to mid portion of my abdomen.

Did I call my doctor on the weekend? No.

Did I go to the ER? No. Though I probably should have.

I called my gastric bypass/gallbladder/hernia surgeon's office yesterday, and left a message for one of the doctors. They think it might be an ulcer. Which is what they thought it was when I was having all of the pain before the gallbladder/hernia/adhesions surgery.

I've increased my reflux med to twice a day, and they're scheduling me for another EGD (yeah!!! -- said sarcastically) for Thursday. EDITED TO ADD: EGD is scheduled for next Wednesday AM, bright and early.

Of course, with some legal issues going on with my ever-present custody battle with my ex-husband, I had to reschedule my interview with Frontier from Wed to Thurs, because of having to be in court this Wed morning. Of course, now I have to have an EGD on Thurs. Will I ever get into the midwifery program?

Yes, I'm sure I'm stressed out. But I highly doubt that stress is causing my abdominal pain again. I also don't think it's an ulcer. I got the all-clear on my last EGD in March, with no sign of ulceration in my GI tract (at least, not in the gastric bypass portion of my GI tract).

My pain starts about 1 hour after eating - but not after every meal - no correlation with foods either - it could be ANY food. Pain this weekend was lasting 4-5 hours after the onset of the pain. Nothing made it better - not Gas-X, tums, reglan or vicodin. Yes, I tried vicodin one time. For shits and giggles.

I am passing flatus, and my bowel function is decreased. Only smaller BM's. Maybe a partial bowel obstruction?? No vomiting. Minimal nausea. No rectal bleeding. I seem to have more bowel sounds lately - usually a sign that I'm digesting a meal. (I normally get noisy bowel sounds after eating.) My usual triggers to have a BM (drinking morning cup of coffee) not working as per normal days. Occasional abdominal distention, but usually nothing more than usual. (Flatter tummy in AM, belly distends after meals, normal stuff!)

Makes me wonder if I have another hernia, and the digested material is getting stopped up partially at the herniation site. Or maybe some diverticulosis?

Anyway, if the pain gets like it was on the weekend - with that dreaded ripping sensation - I'm heading to the ER. My local ER will have me evaluated by my surgeon's office, while in the ER (found that out yesterday!! I knew I should have gone to the ER this weekend!).

Before my gallbladder removal, they were talking about admission and working on a treatment regimen in-house, if my EGD then showed an ulcer. I can't afford to miss a lot of the upcoming things this week, if I need admitted. But I suppose I'd have to deal with it, if it comes down to that.
