That's a good question to have your mother ask her primary care provider who knows her overall physical condition and her possible limitations, if any.    Lynn 
I would agree with Michelle, especially the tip on avoiding hills as it may cause additional strain to the muscle. Have you visited any health care providers? Graston or ART (soft tissue therapies) may be helpful for you base
If you are still having pain post surgery, it might be best to talk with your doctor to make sure everything is ok and normal.  Are you currently taking any medications?
