Yes, this is fine.  Raising the knees will take tension off the back.  A bed wedge or knee wedge works the best for this.  You can also use a regular pillow but I find the wedges are better.
as you mention it is best to stay very, very well hydrated, eat a diet rich in yin or calming foods, work... for the vertebra to be "encouraged" to go back from whence it came. It takes time, be patient....  ...
