Gear

Choosing a bike.

First, choose how much you're willing to spend. Expect to spend around $1,500 for a new road bike (though you can easily spend up to $5,000).

Choosing a bike

Fit matters.

It's important to find a bike that fits your body dimensions and your riding style. Get your bike fit by an expert if you're serious about riding.

Wear layers.

Wear layers and a bike jersey with a pocket so you can pack the layers you take off.

Getting started

Don't tow.

Being towed behind a car or bicycle is a formula for losing control and getting injured.

No drafting

Unlike most bicycle races, drafting is not allowed in a triathlon.

Common Distances

The most common distances are Sprint (75 km swim / 20 km bike / 5km run), Olympic (15 / 40 / 10) and Ironman (3.8 / 180 / 42).
