Racquetball is a fast-paced racket sport played with a hollow rubber ball in an indoor or outdoor court. It was developed on a handball court in the early 1950's by a man named Joe Sobek, who aggressively promoted his game of 'paddle racquets' at YMCA's across the country. Racquetball is a game that everyone can enjoy all year round, rain or shine. It combines the social and competitive elements of sport with substantial health and fitness benefits. Most colleges have courts available to the public, some YMCAs have courts, or you can ask your local health clubs if they maintain racquetball courts. There are courts in almost every town.
One of the things that makes racquetball unique is that the court's walls, floor, and ceiling are all in play. Racquetball is generally a fast-paced, action-packed game. Players use a strung racket, goggle or similar eye protection, and a small, bouncy rubber ball. Many players wear a glove on their racket hand and racquetball shoes.
