Vasectomy

Introduction

A vasectomy is a simple and highly effective method of contraception. It is sometimes known as 'male sterilization'. A vasectomy is usually considered to be a permanent form of contraception, although in some cases the procedure can be reversed, if necessary. For example, you may want a reversal if you decide to have children later on in life, or if you meet a new partner who wants to have children with you.

How does a vasectomy work?

A vasectomy works by preventing sperm from reaching the semen which is ejaculated from the man's penis during sex. It is a quick and painless surgical procedure which is usually carried out under local anesthetic. This means that in most cases you will be able to return home the same day as your procedure.

Following a vasectomy, most men experience some mild pain and discomfort. However, this usually passes within a few days. After the procedure, you will be able to drive and return to work within 1-2 days.

A vasectomy has no effect on your sex drive, or your ability to enjoy sex. You will still have erections and ejaculate normally. The only difference is that the semen you ejaculate will not contain sperm. The body continues to produce sperm after the procedure, but the testicles naturally reabsorb the unneeded sperm.
