All strains of streptococcal bacteria can cause complications, as the infections they produce can trick the body's immune system into attacking its own cells accidentally, while it tries to rid itself of the infection. This can lead to serious conditions such as rheumatic fever (infection affecting the heart and joints) and glomerulonephritis (kidney inflammation).
