To diagnose edema, your doctor will take a note of your previous medical history, as well as the symptoms that you are experiencing.

If your doctor suspects that an undiagnosed condition may be causing your edema, they may carry out:

• blood tests,
• urine tests,
• a chest X-ray,
• liver function tests,
• kidney function tests, or
• heart function tests, such as an ECG (electrocardiogram).
