There is always ambivalence about any kind of change a person wants to make. Change is hard, whether it is changing a job, a life partner, a home, or your weight.
In order to tip the balance for yourself in favor of losing weight, try considering the plus side as well as the minus side of your weight and your eating as they are now. You may be used to thinking about only the negatives, hoping that this will prompt you to lose. But don't be fooled into thinking that the negative side to the problem will automatically make you change.
So often a woman will say, "I know I desperately need to lose 30 lbs, but I can't seem to get motivated". Someone who says this is probably concentrating on the negatives of her weight problem. She looks fat. She feels awful. She's embarrassed. She can't wear the clothes she wants to wear. All this may be so for her, but where are the positives? When you ignore them, you will be out of touch with reality.
The positives of your weight problem are exactly what pose the biggest obstacle to solving it. The good aspects of overeating and being overweight are what make them so hard to give up. They do something for you. It is your job to assess what role the extra eating and extra weight are playing in your life.
