What is a healthy way to lose body fat?

Posted by Marissa M.

I've been going to the gym everydayfor at least 20 mins, i'm in college so the gym is on campus and i've been making sure to watch what i'm eating... but i've lost three pound in three weeks, is that good, or is there more i could be doing to lose it faster? but to also maintain the loss not to keep going up and down.

There are exceptions to every rule, but the generally accepted rule o' thumb is to lose an average of 1-2 lbs per week over a period of time. I consider an even better guide to be a loss of 1-2% of bodyweight. Essentially, this means the closer you are to your 'ideal weight', the slower the weight will come off.

Also, notice I said, AVERAGE...OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. Some weeks might see the scale move 2, 3, 4 pounds or more. Other times, it'll sit still for what seems to be an eternity.

I like to have my (weight loss) clients get on the scale every 2 weeks. No more, no less. That usually gives us enough time to see if what we're doing is working. If not, we make minor adjustments & give it another 2 weeks.

While I don't know anything about your training program, it sounds like you're doing a great job... keep up the good work!

Sounds like you're doing everything right. Joe is correct 1-2 lbs average is great. You're much more likely to maintain weight loss that is achieved in this manner than you are to maintain losses from crash or fad diets. Hang in there, your doing a great job!!
