Weight gain: what causes it?

Sometimes you gain weight without giving yourself "permision". It just creeps up on you. Why?

Of course, you must be eating too much, or in some way taking in too many calories. But what's the reason for overeating?

Try to pinpoint when your weight gain started. Even if you don't weigh yourself consistently, you still probably know approximately when your clothes began to feel too tight. It helps if you can write down the actual date you remember first noticing.

Next, see if you can remember what was going on in your life three weeks before this date and three weeks after this date. Good things, bad things, include them all.

This can provide you with clues. Maybe it was something physical that was happening. Maybe you got sick, or discovered a medical problem. Maybe you were having a relationship problem. Could you have started to feel down for no clear reason? Perhaps you were under an unusual amount of stress at work or at home.

There are many things that have an impact on our lives, sometimes just below our awareness. Becoming aware of what is affecting you will go a long way toward helping you understand what was  before a "mystery" weight gain. This gives you a good jumping off point for finding a better solution to your weight problem.
